What is Power Over Ethernet (PoE)?
Field level wiring used to be very simple, a sensor was either powered or passive and were all analogue, field controllers had power supplies for every sensor and every sensor had an associated controller. It was only when the idea of networking these devices into a control system network became popular and practical that engineer’s began questioning how else power can be provided over the same set of wires used for the network connection. The idea became much simpler when Ethernet and TCP/IP became the de-facto standard for all networks and so Power over Ethernet (PoE) was born.

So What is Power over Ethernet? (PoE)

PoE permits a standard Ethernet connection to transmit data and power over a single Cat5 cable. It was originally produced by Cisco Systems well before the current IEEE 802.3af-2008 standard was released.  The standard covers 2 types of devices, Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) which are usually Ethernet Switches and adaptors to supply power and connectivity to attached PoE devices. The second type is for Powered Devices (PD), this entails anything from a wireless access point right through to a security camera. There are 2 type of operations specified in the 802.af standard with Type A transmitting power and data over the same data pairs as 10/100Base-T Ethernet whilst Type B utilises unused pairs. The PSE can use either mode but not both simultaneously, whilst the Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) will also test for standards-compliance before providing power to the Powered Device (PD).

Why Power over Ethernet? (PoE)

Well why not? Providing power and Ethernet data over a single cable results in a dramatic reduction in the amount of wiring required, therefore initial cost and long-term maintenance in manufacturing and industrial environments are minimal costs. Running DC power over long distance...CONTINUE READING HERE

Industrial Internet of Things
By 2020 it is foreseen that over 50 billion devices will be internet connected. By 2008 there was more IoT devices than there were people, yet just 0.06% (which equates to 10 billion out of 1.5 trillion globally existing devices) of IoT capable devices are currently connected. Staggering statistics are just the beginning.
The real truth in the breathtaking numbers is that the IoT and all its impending capabilities are only currently recognized and exploited in factory, healthcare and global corporate sectors. Of course this is down to the immediate benefits and data liberation that the IoT entails which of course has vast influences and potential for certain technology based, automated and industry focused organizations for whom connectivity and communication are at the forefront of their development. It is also vitally important for organizations across any global sector to be ahead of the game as- one that is standing still, is one that is falling behind- and right now getting ahead is the opportunity that IoT encapsulates.
At Assured Systems we are a strong part of this industry revelation and the transformation of embedded systems in order to assist companies in any sector of how they can relish in the abundance of benefits the IoT is capable of providing. Our latest offering is pretty exciting - the CPS 200 is an embedded system specially designed as an IoT gateway device for the industrial field. Nexcom’s IoT gateway solution CPS 200 equips you with a simple and secure connection to the cloud for the control and monitoring of factory operations and the harnessing of data from automation processes

IPPC Series with Fieldbus
Touchscreen panel’s popularity has exploded in recent years and not just because of smart phones but instead, the economic notion of Jevons Paradox- when technological progress increases efficiency (as we are currently seeing) the benefits of that progress becomes almost muted or even drowned due to the increased rate of consumption because of the demand for the newer, most efficient models. And, as you see when you look in almost any direction- screens, displays and touchscreens are now nowhere near personal devices they are now commercial tools, programmable intelligence that will one day, likely be your colleague. Hence it is now that the relationship between man and machine are almost connected, interfaces are becoming cutting-edge, they need to be more functional, ergonomic and have a beneficial, notable ROI. This allows for organizations to easily integrate the latest technology such as IoT installations and have an efficient, simple and practical human machine interface (HMI) for staff to work with.
Some of our newest inclusions into our Panel PC range are built specifically for the purpose. Seamless design for easy navigation and a clinical front- all with IP66 rating for total dust exclusion and significant water protection from jets and waves. Computer designers have been immensely focused upon size for many years now and it’s only in recent times that real significant advancements have been made, it is these advancements which pave the way for the next. In the industrial and embedded worlds efficiency is critical, a key factor in achieving this is utilizing the capacity of your space to its maximum. Even more so when considering cloud integration, upgrading hardware or integrating a completely new system. The theory of Moore’s Law has for long stood rigid and true. It is however soon to be redundant.
Image result for moores law

Originally coined as a way to explain the ongoing improvements in transistor scaling after Intel co-founder Gordon Moore observed that the number of transistors per square inch had doubled every year since their invention- that was in 1965. Since then it has been redefined and extended to include long-term trends in semi-conductor performance and new chip features. The International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS) recently released an extensive update on the future of semiconductor technologies and it details that conventional 2D transistor scaling will likely end by 2021 to be replaced by new and different types of integration.

Windows Embedded IoT: Official Partner

Windows 10 has taken a bit of a different turn however. As a part of Microsoft’s desire to get us and all our devices connected, Windows 10 Embedded is now newly dressed as Windows IoT. Microsoft’s Embedded versions have existed for over 15 years and in that time pretty much every version of Windows has had an embedded incarnation such as XP, 7, 8 and now 10. For more information on the whole windows family see here

Windows 10 IoT Enterprise

Windows 10 IoT Enterprise is a direct descendant of the Windows Embedded OS family, it entails an x86 version of Windows designed to run unattended in non-PC devices such as POS, Kiosk, ATM or outdoor displays. It can run all varieties of Windows applications due to its backwards compatibility with applications created decades ago. For instance if you’re running Windows XP Embedded (end of life 2016) then it is the natural progression.
It works therefore in perfect harmony with the Azure cloud which Microsoft is reinforcing to compete against Google and Amazon variations. However Microsoft has a secret weapon- the Azure Stack, which many businesses have been waiting for and are going to have to wait a little longer until 2017. Microsoft have one huge advantage over Google and Amazon. For decades companies have depended on Microsoft operating systems, it is instilled into so many and Microsoft recognize this and are therefore looking to capitalize and bring Azure to them by producing integratable private clouds for individual entities as a part of an effortless transition.

Windows 10 IoT Core

Windows 10 IoT Core is optimized for smaller, lower cost industry devices such as IoT gateways and micro-kiosks for single line business applications. It runs the Universal Windows App and sits comfortably in-line with other Windows 10 editions for simplified integration and to allow you to develop, configure and manage tools in the format that you are accustomed to. IoT Core is a free download available without the usual licensing required for embedded partners. However It is designed to run on resource limited equipment and not suitable for general purpose computing though despite missing a system UI, it is a fully functional OS that will also take advantage of core Windows APIs.

Olympic Digital Signage & The New Giada G330

The Rio Olympics. It has been as farcical as it has been fantastic. The controversy surrounding the games has caused equal arguments from the uproar of the vast spending to put the games on to those who think it is a great opportunity to showcase one of the world’s fastest growing economies. The Olympics is an event of epic scale, and what comes with that epic scale?  Epic opportunity. Brands associating with the games are appealing to worldwide audience that will spiral into the billions, and despite how ironic some of those advertisers maybe when considered with the values of the games, the fundamental factor is of the economic empowerment that the games carry, and, although this is more contested in Rio than in most probably any Olympics that has come before, the IOC is expecting at least 500,000 tourists to flock to the 37 venues.
The Olympics therefore carries vast economic influence and when coupled with the 2014 FIFA World Cup of course which sees similar numbers worldwide and locally- it’s been an encouraging decade for Brazil’s outward appeal amid internal political turmoil.
Digital signage has unsurprisingly rocketed in the South American giant since 2014 as the attention turns to turning heads. The digital signage invasion is not just for the advertisers though, many of the displays will be used to broadcast live TV coverage of the games alongside the advertising. The key note here is that this really emphasizes the versatility digital signage offers to capture tourists and locals alike, but also the versatility of the signage also means that it can be deployed in completely different ways- be it for a menu-board, way-finding, self-service, information or interactive touchscreens.
The interoperability of signage has meant that despite the 37 venues spread sporadically across the carnival capital, advertisers have no trouble in capturing their audience to every point, and the real point is; it’s easier than ever before with reliable and effective network management, here at Assured, we have an armoury of products and solutions ready to maximize your ROI on digital signage and ensure you attain the success that awaits.
The blossoming success of the signage industry inevitably leads to advancements as we’ve seen with stunning all-in-one displays, stretched displays and even transparent displays. But to power those displays requires fast reliable, compact network solutions that our latest product- the Giada G330- epitomizes. It is an industry leading digital signage PC that supports up-to 6 display video output running independently with UHD compatibility at 60Hz. Ensuring your network is reliable, simple and versatile is key to enforcing a successful signage strategy and the Giada G330 is a stand-out product for such purposes.
Performance derives from the 6th Generation Intel Core i7/i5/i3 (Skylake-S) CPU and is built for complex and demanding digital signage applications and takes over as Giada’s flagship.... CONTINUE READING

As the push to integrate intelligent systems intensifies, OPS (Open Pluggable Specification) signage platforms are paving the way to the advancement and evolution of the commercial and retail markets. In 2010 Intel released the Open Pluggable Specification in order to define a modular, integrated hardware architecture to forge a link between a digital signage player and the accompanying displays for a compact, cost-efficient and intelligent signage solution. Assured Systems is THE place to buy Intel OPS players with a hand-picked selection from globally leading manufacturers and in-house system integration to provide you with a ready-to-go installation.

Intel OPS Compliance Explained

Intel developed the OPS standard six years ago upon acknowledging a fledgling but fragmented market with no industry standard flat level player but instead a range of signage players from manufacturers with their own proprietary solution. Standalone solutions would of course work well with a standalone digital signage player the growing demand was for integrated solutions and allows system integrators like ourselves to offer total solutions rather than seperate displays and media players. The Intel OPS has also improved efficiency in terms of system deployment, usage, maintenance and infrastructure upgrades.
A key issue that OPS slot computers have countered is that users were forking out substantial amounts to upgrade and replace systems as they had to modify the display itself to fit the new module. By engaging with their ecosystem partners such as Microsoft and Taiwan DS SIG the OPS was born. OPS slot computers are specially designed to consider future developments in signage such as slim line displays and the diversity of sizes of signage displays that have risen on to the market such as the stunning stretched monitors. OPS modules are constructed as lean and highly effective computers with adequate and considerate heat dissipation but due to their small form and OPS players have been a critical success that in truth has allowed the signage industry to succeed in the manner it is.
On top of all the conveniences for signage applications, OPS is a standard that has been adopted by many of Intel’s partners and so many OPS manufacturers such as our own partners Axiomtek and Nexcom are able to produce versatileOPS slot computers that are compatible for instance with Smartboards such as Activpanel, Promethean and other interactive whiteboards of which we have various compatible slot computers available.
It is important to note that Intel OPS is a standard that defines the interoperability and integration ability between a media player and display, there are numerous manufacturers that comply with the OPS standard and hence produce OPS modules- find them here.
The OPS standard is a pluggable module utilizing an 80 pin JAE TX24A/TX25A series connector. This enables the OPSstandard a completely versatile standard to guarantee easy integration into any compliant display, the JAE connector also assists the pluggable module in its industrial applications with the single connector providing I/O connectivity as well as its power that is received from the display.

Nexcom OPS Modules- Slot Computers

We have an expansive range of OPS signage players including new OPS modules such as the NDiS M533 from Nexcom. With a 4th generation Intel Core it is of course OPS compliant whilst offering comprehensive processing power. The NDiS M533 also has up-to 16GB of onboard memory as well as integrated Intel HD Graphics and is ideal for high-quality content to really catch your audience’s attention.
Similarly the NDiS M335 also from Nexcom is an OPS compliant player based upon the Intel Celeron N3150 and is designed to render rich multimedia content via its Intel HD Graphics Engine supporting 4K and Microsoft DirectX 11.1, as well as 3D rendering image processing and video decoding for targeted, accurate delivery of marketing messages. See more Nexcom OPS modules here.

Axiomtek OPS Modules/ Slot Computers

The OPS500-501-H from Axiomtek is an OPS compliant digital signage player based around the 6th Generation Intel Core processors as well as the profound Intel HD530 GPU enabling the presentation of rich content up to 4K at 60Hz. There are various I/O capabilities on the OPS500-501-H as well as optional WiFi connectivity via the mini-PCIe slot, to see the full specification click here, or for our other Axiomtek OPS slot computers see here

OPS: Intelligent Systems

The Intel OPS specification does however stretch further than the many benefits already discussed, advertisers can benefit from the anonymous detecting sensors for gender, age and impression time by using the Intel Audience Impression Metric (AIM) Suite anonymous viewer analytics software. The data can then be sent back to a server or the cloud for further analysis such as crosschecking sales data. The AIM application can also enable an intelligent screen with displayed content reflecting the viewers demographic for smarter and more effective signage. The OPS players also have the ability to integrate touchscreen or gesture technologies for interactive advertising.

OPS Module: Promethean/ActivPanel/Smartboard Compatible

Our OPS module range includes slot computers ideal for interactive whiteboards such as Promethean OPS, ActivPanel OPS and Smartboard OPS computers. Players such as the OPS883 and OPS880 are ideal for interactive whiteboard applications!  As a system integrator we can provide OPS slot computers at an effective and efficient price point to provide you with a complete and suitable solution.
It is therefore evidently apparent that the OPS standard has been a success and adopted world wide, which is no small feat especially when you consider the OPS standard is beginning to encroach in other areas such as education and so what was originally a standardization effort by the industry that has become fully integrated itself.
